The Dos and Don’ts of Fibromyalgia

 

Barbara Keddy offers some tips on living with fibromyalgia:

Do

  • Do practice meditation – breathe
  • Do practice being mindful in all you do
  • Do exercise, even if just walking
  • Do take up a hobby that is new to you, creative and repetitious
  • Do have massage or massage yourself lightly with a feather
  • Do practice self-compassion
  • Do avoid too much stimulation
  • Do eat plenty of fruits and vegetables
  • Do avoid caffeine and alcohol
  • Do go to a therapist for talk therapy (if you can afford it)

Don’t

  • Don’t allow anxiety to escalate into panic
  • Don’t become overly stressed
  • Don’t over-medicate
  • Don’t remain a couch potato
  • Don’t spend time with people who are negative
  • Don’t over-extend yourself or be afraid to say “no”
  • Don’t partake in unproven ‘alternate’ therapies or take weird concoctions
  • Don’t over-indulge on holiday excitement
  • Don’t expect a quick ‘cure’
  • Don’t forget to smile
